Wichtiges bei der Adoption eines Tieres

Important things to consider when adopting an animal

A good deed that changes lives

Adopting an animal from a shelter is an exceptionally noble act. You're giving an animal a second chance and in return receiving loyalty, love, and true friendship. However, there are a few important things to consider to ensure a harmonious new life together.

Give space and time

Animals from shelters often feel anxious or insecure. Don't rush them or overstep boundaries. Give your new companion the opportunity to settle in at their own pace.

For you, too, adoption means a period of adjustment: a new everyday life, new responsibilities, and your new role as a pet parent.

Documents and health of the animal

Before you bring a pet home, make sure you have the following:

• a pet passport with entries for all vaccinations (stickers with vaccine name, batch, date, signature and stamp of the veterinarian);

• Information on parasite treatment (date, preparation, sticker in the ID card);

• Information on sterilization/castration (date, type of procedure);

• optional – a microchip.

Questions for the animal shelter

Ask the staff at the animal shelter:

• the animal’s history (age, origin);

• Information on chronic diseases or special conditions;

• Information on how the animal gets along with children and other animals.

First vet visit

If there is no urgent need (except for questions about vaccinations, neutering, and parasite treatments—these should be addressed immediately), consult a veterinarian prophylactically after the acclimation period. The following are recommended:

• a blood biochemistry test;

• an ultrasound of the internal organs.

This gives you a clear picture of your pet's health and allows you to adjust the food or take medical action in a timely manner if necessary.

Don't forget: regular parasite treatments and annual vaccinations are mandatory.

Mental health and joy

Don't adopt animals just out of pity. Much more important is the joy they bring into your life.

Walking together, cuddling, and playing games give you positive emotions, reduce stress, and support mental health—something that is especially valuable today.

And if you want to experience this special atmosphere, visit the animal shelter @tierschutz-berlin. Wonderful dogs and cats await you there—perhaps you'll find a new friend or simply spend some quality time with the animals. And you'll definitely go home with a warm feeling in your heart—even if perhaps without a new roommate 😉
